During the pandemic, the number of puppies and dogs being adopted reached record highs. Combined with the rising housing market, this means that many Canadians made a move with an additional furry friend (or two). Pets are like family to many of us, and we want to ensure that you and Fido both get the best of both worlds in your new house! Here are some things to keep in mind as you welcome a dog into your home.

Flooring – Avoid Carpet!

Suffice to say, carpets can be a magnet for bacteria and pet odour of the foulest kind. If you must have carpet, have a large bottle of enzyme-based cleaner ready on hand, as it is more powerful and effective than baking soda and vinegar. A mix of tiles and hardwood flooring are most ideal, as they are more resistant to scratches and gouges. Keep your furry friends’ nails trimmed to protect the hardwood floors, and that they don’t get damaged over use.

Invest in a Good Vacuum

Some vacuums are actually designed to pull dog hair and fur from carpets and rugs more effectively than a regular household vacuum, so if you are in the market for a new one, shop around for a powerful vacuum that has a multi-option suction feature for hard and carpeted floors. This will ensure that your floors stay as clean and neat as possible, and will avoid a buildup of hair clumps and other bits.

Consider Switching to Pet-Friendly Cleaners

For us bipedal folks, it can be easy to forget that our pets are four-legged friends, and thus spend a lot of time closer to the floor than we do. So while it might not affect you much when you swipe away a stain on the floor with a powerful cleaner, the fumes and strong scent of it will affect your dog over time. Think about going green for your household cleaning products, or switch to home remedies for a healthier clean.

Be Aware of Plants

This one can be a bit tricky, as some pups are prone to chewing and nibbling on foliage, and others don’t give greenery a second thought. Just to err on the side of caution, make sure that your yard outdoors is free from plants that are toxic to dogs, and keep tabs on your indoor plants as well. There are many gorgeous plant options that can bring your green space to life without causing possible harm to your dog. Searching for your dream home with your pups in mind will have you considering not only what is best for you, but what is best for your furry friends, too! After all, our pets are like family for many of us.
